Are You Wave Aware? Tips to deal with electromagnetic fields
Most of us are aware of the effects of smog on a hot summer’s day – we can see it, we can feel it and our cities even have warning systems in place to alert us when the air quality is poor. However, most of us are not aware of the “electrosmog” that surrounds us every single day that can also have a very real impact on our health. To give you some perspective, below is a quote from NASA’s introduction to the electromagnetic spectrum.
“As you sit watching TV, not only are there visible light waves from the TV striking your eyes, but also radio waves, transmitting from a nearby station, and microwaves carrying cellphone calls and text messages, and waves from your neighbor’s WiFi, and GPS units in the cars driving by. There is a chaos of waves from all across the spectrum passing through your room right now.”
Did you know that as early as 1987, scientists discovered that exposure to low levels of electrosmog created changes in human brain waves and behaviour. The world has changed a lot in over 30 years. These days, with phones in our pockets, microwaves in our kitchens and satellite systems in our cars, we are inviting unprecedented levels of radiofrequency electromagnetic field radiation (EMF) into our homes and our bodies. Let’s talk about how to minimize your EMF exposure so you can be in better control of your own health.
Electrical hypersensitivity
Over the last 20 years, physicians have reported that more and more people have been showing symptoms that correlate to electrical hypersensitivity and radiofrequency EMF radiation.
Electrical hypersensitivity symptoms might include:
- headaches
- dizziness
- nausea
- flu-like symptoms
- chronic fatigue
- depression
- difficulty concentrating
- behaviour problems in children
- sleep disturbance
- skin sensitivity and redness
- memory loss and confusion
- changes in heart rate or blood pressure
What is electromagnetic radiation?
The electromagnetic wave spectrum is composed of two parts: ionizing radiation and non-ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation includes gamma-rays, x-rays and ultraviolet rays – these have clearly established risks of exposure and known levels of damage to living organisms since they can cause chemical changes in tissues. Non-ionizing radiation includes visible-frequencies as well as radio-frequencies. WiFi, smart meters, gaming systems, baby monitors, cordless phones and cell phones all use radiofrequency radiation. Note that ‘microwave’ frequencies make up part of the radiofrequency spectrum and include WiFi and satellite communication as well as 2G, 3G, 4G and the new 5G cellular phone bands. Radiofrequency radiation can travel anywhere it wants to – through walls or even through our bodies.
Impact of radiofrequency EMF radiation
By now I’m sure you’re wondering, if radiofrequency radiation can travel into our bodies, how can that affect our health? While Health Canada deems radiofrequency radiation biologically safe, the level of our low-grade, constant exposure is not reflected in their guidelines. Radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs) may actually affect the mitochondria — our cellular energy factories. Mitochondria are fundamental to every energy-dependent process in our bodies, most notably our nervous system. EMF-induced disruption of mitochondria may effectively bolster neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s dementia and Parkinson’s.
Particular EMFs may also play a part in other health issues, including the following.
- psychiatric disorders
- autoimmune diseases
- autonomic nervous system dysfunctions
- headaches and migraines
- chronic fatigue syndrome
- fibromyalgia
- stroke
- diabetes
- heart disease
- reproductive disorders
- cancers and more…
What is ‘Dirty Electricity?’
“Dirty electricity” is when high frequencies travel along electric wires between the power source and electric grid and radiate into your environment. This includes power lines, televisions, computers and other electrical devices.
Minimize Your EMF Exposure
Technology makes our lives easier, but it also makes it more complicated to avoid EMF radiation.
Tips to minimize your EMF & exposure:
- Discontinue use of cordless phones
- Turn off your WiFi when not in use (eg: overnight); even better, use hard-wired internet and not WiFi at home
- Choose a wired router instead of wireless or hybrid routers
- Switch your fuses off at night
- Choose to use a hard-wired telephone over cell phones or cordless phones
- Use speaker phone setting or wired head-sets with your cell phone (less EMF than Bluetooth)
- Buy an EMF-reducing sleep sanctuary or canopy, which may consist of silver-coated threads partially capable of blocking EMF
- Delay use of wireless devices in your children and voice your opinion with schools/boards to avoid WiFi
- Opt out of SMART meter use (for water, electric and gas meters) in your region/municipality
- And perhaps most important, get outside!
Spend time in nature ‘grounding’ yourself – direct contact with the earth opens the gateway for electrons to be absorbed by your body, to help neutralize oxidative stress and minimize any derangements in the electrical activities of your body.
What if we recharged our lives as often as we charge our phones? By disconnecting with our devices and reconnecting with our earth, we are able to take greater control of our health.
